What is a blackletter font?
Blackletter is a broad family of scripts developed from medieval European manuscript writing. Modern digital versions range from formal textura-inspired faces to simplified blackletter fonts designed for logos, tattoos, music graphics, and apparel.
Because the letterforms are dense and highly stylized, blackletter works best for a few important words. Pair it with a quiet serif or sans serif for dates, prices, descriptions, and other supporting information.
How to choose readable blackletter
Test the exact word before choosing a family. Capitals, repeated vertical strokes, and combinations such as rn, m, and w can become difficult to distinguish in ornate styles.
For a tattoo or permanent brand mark, print the design at multiple sizes and confirm the font license permits the intended commercial or reproduction use.
